Take however many photos you need, just make sure they put a smile on your face. He knows how to just walk into the room and still entertain everyone, still make a personal eye contact, shake a hand like Dave. Haney: Corey Taylor's one of those people. Because he was such a humble person.īaltin: It's interesting the way that you put it. But I know Darrell would just be so blown away to feel that somebody as extraordinary and as talented as Dave was influenced by him. I was like, "You know, dude? There's not many people out there, but you've got a little Dimebag in you." I knew it the second I met him that he was one of those people, that was what you saw on the outside was inside too. When Dave and I first met, few run ins and then just as the years went on, just hanging out and having fun and people watching and just funny story or whatever, we just clicked. He was just having fun and that was just him, he was the same person onstage as offstage. Haney: That's the thing, hearing him say that to you, it's like I know Darrell, in his mind even today would have never thought he'd be influencing people that way. In today's world of music, you would hope that there's some sort of sense of community and this scene definitely has it.īaltin: What do Dave's comments about Darrell mean to you because as much as the music is important I feel like it's the little things that matter? It really seems like community of people that hang together and support each other and jam with each other." But it really is. And I think they **always assumed, "Oh my God, it's going to be a bunch of f**king crazy heavy metal people." And afterwards they always say, "What a nice group of people. Grohl: I brought some friends who have nothing to do with metal and nothing to do with music to a few of these events. I'm so amazed by it, the love.īaltin: This event really captures that vibe. Haney: Yeah, it's not fading, it's growing. It means so much to me that, it's 15 years later, still remembering him and still want to remember him, and still want to be part of it, and that respect.īaltin: What's so interesting about that though is that the legacy changes over time and it grows. But it just seems to grow every year, and the magic gets better and more fun. So it wasn't here but it was that way was still done. And this has been going on too, 11 years, we skipped a couple here and there just because we were in someplace else or we did Ozzfest in 2008. I've only been doing two where we have the Ride for Dime, it's been 15 years going, and we just did our 15th in August. It's food now." You know?īaltin: How many events do you do a year? It's not all about sex when you're 20 years old. I think so too because what else is better than music? Most people, "Hey, we're getting older. Yeah, we're doing wings for the first time.īaltin: I feel like that's such a cool way to pay homage. He's got a killer hot wing sauce, but we got to perfect our chicken, man. And then they're like, "This barbecue's great."īaltin: What Darrell recipes would you give to Dave to use? That started out, we just invited 40 people over and it was like 140 people came. Haney: Yeah, that was the backyard in here in California. Grohl: We did that one in your backyard, that was f**king fun as s**t, too. But we had like 300 people there and it was. We did a front yard barbecue, but at Darrell's house in the front yard. Rita Haney: He came to Texas and did Ride for Dime for us back in August. That being said, the next two years of my life will be f**king making music.īaltin: How many of these have you done together? So there's music instead of it becoming the main focus becomes a part of your life. When I cook barbecue, I do it with friends and there's always music involved. So now I've got kids in the school where I play music at the school fundraisers. But the music is always incorporated in pretty much everything you do. And over time it becomes more just a part of your life. Grohl: I feel like when you first start playing music it's pretty much all about the music and it's you're just so focused on making the music and playing music. Baltin: I always go back to when I was interviewing Slash for the very first solo album, and he was saying "I find myself doing stuff now that I never would have imagined doing." And not necessarily in a bad way, but it's changed so much in terms of the expectations fans.
